Tumetoka Mbali; Photos Of Thika Superhighway In 1900, 2000, 2009 And 2019, A Period Of 120 Years

Thika road has evolved so quickly given the photos of the road in a period of 120 years. The road was mostly bushy in 1900 with very few cars on the road. This was still the time when Kenya was still a British protectorate.

In 2000, the road was mainly a 4 lane road separated with a grass.

Traffic jam was a major problem and the government initiated a plan to build the now Thika Superhighway.

The construction work started in January 2009 and the road was inaugurated by the then President Mwai Kibaki in November 2012.

The government spent 32 billion Kenyan shillings funded by African Development Bank, Exim Bank of China and the government itself to construct this 50km road.

Thika Superhighway is a 8 lane road with some sections having 12 lanes. Reports indicate that the road serves around 150,000 vehicles per day.
