The mayor of a small Mexican community married an alligator in what has been praised as a “really beautiful tradition.”
Last Thursday, June 30, Victor Hugo Sosa, the mayor of San Pedro Huamelula, Oaxaca, married a reptile wearing a wedding dress in a colorful ceremony.
The reptile’s jaw was taped together to prevent mishaps during the wedding.
Sosa cemented their union with a kiss on the reptile’s face following their wedding.
The alligator was then taken through the town as men lined the streets with their hats to fan the newlyweds.
It is said that the strange marriage dates back centuries and is a tradition of the Chontal and Huave indigenous people in the state of Oaxaca.
The ceremony is associated with nature and plentiful harvests.
“We ask nature for enough rain, for enough food, that we have fish in the river,”said Sosa.
The seven-year-old reptile is believed to be a deity representing mother Earth. Her marriage to a local leader is meant to symbolise the unity between humans and the divine.
She was dubbed “little princess” by wedding guests.
